Libertarian New Year’s Resolutions
By Harry Browne
– I resolve to sell liberty by appealing to the self-interest of each prospect, rather than preaching to people and expecting them to suddenly adopt my ideas of right and wrong.
– I resolve to keep from being drawn into arguments or debates. My purpose is to inspire people to want liberty- not to prove that they’re wrong.
– I resolve to listen when people tell me of their wants and needs, so I can help them see how a free society will satisfy those needs.
– I resolve to identify myself, when appropriate, with the social goals someone may seek- a cleaner environment, more help for the poor, a less divisive society- and try to show him that those goals can never be achieved by government, but will be well served in a free society.
– I resolve to be compassionate and respectful of the beliefs and needs that lead people to seek government help. I don’t have to approve of their subsidies or policies- but if I don’t acknowledge their needs, I have no hope of helping them find a better way to solve their problems. No matter what the issue, I resolve to keep returning to the central point: how much better off the individual will be in a free society.
– I resolve to acknowledge my good fortune in having been born an American. Any plan for improvement must begin with a recognition of the good things we have. To speak only of America’s defects will make me a tiresome crank.
– I resolve to focus on the ways America could be so much better with a very small government- not to dwell on all the wrongs that exist today.
– I resolve to cleanse myself of hate, resentment, and bitterness. Such things steal time and attention from the work that must be done.
– I resolve to speak, dress, and act in a respectable manner. I may be the first Libertarian someone has encountered, and it’s important that he get a good first impression. No one will hear the message if the messenger is unattractive.
– I resolve to remind myself that someone’s “stupid” opinion may be an opinion I once held. If I can grow, why can’t I help him grow?
– I resolve not to raise my voice in any discussion. In a shouting match, no one wins, no one changes his mind, and no one will be inspired to join our quest for a free society.
– I resolve not to adopt the tactics of Republicans and Democrats. They use character assassination, evasions, and intimidation because they have no real benefits to offer Americans. We, on the other hand, are offering to set people free- and so we can win simply by focusing on the better life our proposals will bring.
– I resolve to be civil to my opponents, and treat them with respect. However anyone chooses to treat me, it’s important that I be a better person than my enemies.

My Platforms

It is difficult to choose three issues because I feel strongly that they are not only all important, but they are all interrelated. Solving problems on a state level will require knowledge of systems theory, Max-Neef’s Barefoot Economics and Model of Human Scale Development, and the willingness to approach and address each issue with an open mind!

“As Libertarians, we seek a world of liberty: a world in which all individuals are sovereign over their own lives and are not forced to sacrifice their values for the benefit of others.

We believe that respect for individual rights is the essential precondition for a free and prosperous world, that force and fraud must be banished from human relationships, and that only through freedom can peace and prosperity be realized.

Consequently, we defend each person’s right to engage in any activity that is peaceful and honest, and welcome the diversity that freedom brings. The world we seek to build is one where individuals are free to follow their own dreams in their own ways, without interference from government or any authoritarian power.”

Peace

Freedom

Prosperity

As you may already know, the first issue of immediate importance to me is

advocating for Parental Rights.

My parental rights were wrongfully terminated by the Department of Human Services. I didn’t know it at the time, but the hugs and kisses goodbye would be the last contact I have had with my sons since December 14, 2019. You can read the letter I wrote to them here.

me+3 Sept 2015
My children and me

As you can imagine, this was a devastating time for me. I lost my family, my professional reputation was destroyed, and I everything I held dear to me for my entire adult life was gone.

I understand now that I am not a mess, but a deeply feeling person in a messy world. I explain that now, when someone asks me why I cry so often. I say, "For the same reason I laugh so often- Because I'm paying attention." Glennon Doyle Melton @iridescentalchemyst

After surviving my second suicide attempt, I made a deal with the Universe. Since the gods would not let me “check out,” I asked them to direct me as I sought justice, not just for my family, but for all families. No family should be made to endure everything we went through.

And so, since that day, I have dedicated my life to networking and researching ways to advocate for re-establishing parental rights in this country and for a complete overhaul of the child welfare system! I even drew up sample legislation based on bills passed in other states!

The fight for justice against corruption is never easy. It never has been and it never will be. It exacts a toll on our self, our families, our friends and especially our children. In the end, I believe, as in my case, the price we pay is well worth holding on to our dignity. Frank Serpico Retired NYPD Detective @iridescentalchemyst

I welcome you to read My Message to Governor Reynolds that I submitted on her website a few years ago, where I summed up the injustices my family endured while under the “supervision” of the Department of Human Services.

You might then be interested in reading DHS Offers Justification to Senator Ernst. Senator Joni Ernst was the only elected official that I reached out to that took the time to submit an inquiry to the Iowa DHS on my behalf. This article includes the letter I received from her and my initial response to the letter she received from them.

Immediately after sending my first letter to Senator Ernst, I began writing a second letter. In the first response, I addressed each of the points raised by the legislative liaison for the Iowa DHS in their justification for terminating my parental rights. Honestly, I do not think they could have done a worse job of defending their decisions. However, perhaps more important were the points I shared in my second letter. You can read that letter in my post Forgiveness is the way to Freedom.

Property Rights

In recent years, actions have been increasingly taken by city and county governments under the guise of local code enforcement. My fiance and I were victim to this trend and our civil rights were severely violated by the City of Vinton back in 2021. I will not get into that further here, but you can read my full article Legal Theft for more information.

a photo collage of Jim's lot before the "abatement" showing our tipi, the panel van full of our belongings, the garden, and the play equipment for Jim's kids.a photo collage of Jim's lot after the "nuisance abatement"
These collages are photographs of Jim’s property- taken a few months before, and then immediately after the city “abated a nuisance.” Read more here.

Quite frankly, this whole movement could not have started at a worse time, given that our country was, and still is in many areas, recovering from the COVID quarantine. Not to mention, many of the codes they are now insistent on enforcing have been in place for many years. After all of our belongings were stolen by the city, I learned that several other friends and neighbors were being issues citations notifying them of alleged violations. This led me to dig deeper, because the best way to confront your opposition in any dispute is to have a greater understanding of their point of view.

To be clear, I am not opposed to the efforts made by local officials to clean up our communities. There are many benefits to enforcing housing and sanitation codes in our communities for both city officials and property owners, and I understand this.

There is also a great deal of personal benefit in clearing out the clutter and cleaning up the environments where we live and work. It can be a very healing process! I wrote about the detrimental effects of clutter and ways to tackle an overwhelming mess in my blog post How to [DEEP] Clean Your Room.

The concerns that I have are related to the disrespectful and tyrannical actions that have been taken by our elected officials. In addition to their horrifying behaviors, the “nuisance abatement” proceedings have been utilized as a tool to commit legal theft of personal property. To make matters worse, the fines they impose have been added to property taxes as “special assessments,’ which can then later be used to undermine property owners that become late paying their taxes!

You'll never find justice in a world where criminals make all the rules
If you want justice…
you will have to fight for it yourself!

I am also concerned about the use of eminent domain and corporations buying up our precious farmland here in Iowa. Corporate farming is detrimental to our land and our livestock, and family farms should be supported to stay in the family!

Our founding fathers established our government for the purpose of protecting our property and securing our fundamental liberties. We have sat back and watch them erode these liberties for far too long! If I were elected, I would staunchly defend the property rights of Iowans from government and corporate theft!

Education

I hope my children still remember how I often preached to them about the importance of education!

When I was younger, I remember how proud our state was of the high quality education that our schools provided! I am proud and eternally grateful for the knowledge and wisdom I gained through my own education.

You can learn more about my education and personal and professional experience on my resume!

Criminal Justice Reform

I know firsthand how corrupt our courts and criminal justice system truly is.

The concept of recidivism involves the likelihood of an offender to re-offend based on the circumstances and conditions placed upon him or her by the system. I am a member and advocate for the group REFORM Alliance- per their website:

Probation and parole systems were meant to hold people accountable and provide a pathway back to work, school, and community – a second chance. Too often, they limit people’s ability to achieve stability and economic self-sufficiency, and serve as a pipeline back to prison.

And we all pay the price.

On any given day, about 75,000 people are incarcerated because of technical violations such as missing an appointment or failing to maintain employment. This costs states more than $2.8 billion per year.

Civil Rights

As I mentioned above, our country has been watching our civil liberties slowly erode under the guise of safety and security. It is time for our elected officials to remember that the Constitution was put in place to protect our fellow citizens from tyranny and oppression, and to change their ways and act accordingly!

That is why I have been an active member of the National Liberty Alliance since 2022! As a representative of the NLA, I also advocate for the Constitutional Sheriff and Peace Officers Association by promoting their cause with the local sheriff and his deputies in my county!
